I taught academic writing and rhetoric for over a decade. I finished a Master's in English and two-thirds of a PhD in modernist literature, passed exams in the history of psychoanalysis, researched dozens of essays, and worked as a writing consultant for advanced undergraduate and graduate students. When I left for other work, I decided I should put what I had learned into practice.
From studying complicated literature and scholarship, I know my fundamentals. Structure, hierarchy, flow, rhythm and momentum, attention to detail. All the ways around writer's block, all the tricks to get out of quicksand, and all the lessons from the times I've succeeded and failed.
My experience with developing writers has made me empathetic about the uniqueness of every project, and I know the cooperation, dialogue, persistence, and goodwill that the writing process requires.
